Center Section Inspection Access

Rather than working on the airplane I spent my "airport time" on Sunday, 5/15/05, taking pictures...and giving the kiddies driving lessons in John Flippen's new "hangar cart". Here are the fruits of my labor. Though the rear spar attachment fitting is not being inspected I took some pictures of it as well.

I took the pictures of the cover plates a while ago and didn't think to take pictures of the attachment fittings on the same side. So, imagine you are on a creeper with your body aligned with the fuselage and your head toward the propeller. The first place you'll visit is the lower front spar attachment fitting on the aircraft's left side...

You are looking at the front spar attachment fitting access plate on the aircraft's left side (the one that is to your right in my "creeper scenario"). Fuselage is on left, wing on right. The circle near the center is the fuel drain valve (this is an A-model).
You just rolled over to the aircraft's right side and are looking at the exposed front spar attachment fitting. Fuselage on the right; wing on the left.
Turning your head 90 degrees to your left you are looking up at the front spar attachment fitting. Fuselage on bottom; wing on top.
Boosting yourself up and with the help of a flashlight you can see the heads of the high-sheer bolts on the front side of the front spar attachment fitting.
Rolling aft to the rear spar here is what he access cover looks like on the aircraft's left side (your right as you lay on the creeper). Fuselage on left; wing on right, flap at bottom right.
Rolling sideways over to the aircraft's right side, you are looking at the exposed rear spar attachment fitting. Fuselage on right; wing on left.
Rotating your head 90 degrees so it is pointed out toward the right wing tip, you are looking at the much more limited access to the inside  of the wing attachment fitting on the rear spar.

Jim Skogen wrote the following about cleaning the center section prior to inspection:

This picture is from George Braly. The center section has been cut off and the probe is being inserted right where the tooth brush needs to go. Clean the area around the rivet heads, both front and back side of the U-channel. Clean both right and left side.
