My name is Jim Reed and I have enjoyed
operating Mentor N34TE for the better part of twenty (20) years. The
serial number is G-24. Manufacture Date of 12-1953. MAA David Berry
and based in Madera, CA.
The cockpit was cleaned up by Milo
Degrassi then out of Stockton. He also added a smoke system.
The powerplant was an original O-430-C13
225 HP. The power plant was pretty tired so the boss elected to have
it overhauled. After that we had nothing but trouble. Oil pressure
dropped to below minimum after a short engine run and the only way
to get the pressure back was roll slowly through the inverted
position. We were unable to solve the problem so the aircraft was
sold.
The aircraft went through at least two
owners until it came back on the market and I was directed to “go
get it back”. The aircraft was purchased from a dentist in Amarillo
TX just down the street from Parks Industries. N34TE had been
somewhat modified as there were new gyros in the front panel, a GPS
com and a new navcom with ILS capabilities. N34TE had also suffered
a partial gear up landing (repaired by Parks Industries) and
somewhere someone had added the after market fuel injection.
At any rate the aircraft is in excellent
shape. We did have Earl’s shop do the carry through spar mod before
Earl died. N34TE has none of the speed or aerobatic limitations that
are carried by most of the fleet. We picked the aircraft up at
Earl’s shop on November 24th 2008. N34TE was the very first aircraft
to enjoy the Parks Tail spar modification.
