Paul Pribble of Mentor Aviation
International, which services T-34s owned by foreign governments
around the world, noted the following about G-138.
The subject aircraft was auctioned off
from the Uruguayan Navy some years back and transferred to the new
owner in California. It must have been sitting somewhere for a while
since the U.S. Civil certification was issued in 2007.
The aircraft was obviously at Pensacola
simply for some type of technical assistance prior to being shipped
to Uruguay which was performed as a favor to the Uruguayan Navy as
they also received a B model through the same channels, other than
this rare instance NARF
(Note 1) Pensacola
did not provide technical support
for any of the MDAP
(Note 2) T-34 aircraft transferred to foreign agencies.
We provided technical logistics support to the Uruguayan Navy and
Air Force during this time period and I remember the aircraft
offered in the public auction.
The black box next to where the pilot's
right knee would be is simply the
voltage regulator base shown with the voltage regulator cover
removed. (See Front Seat picture.)
The "Blister" battery door was part of the USN airframe change #37 (7, April 1958) where the battery was
changed from the AN 3151-2 battery to the MS25211 battery where the
new battery was remounted backwards and was connected through an
ELCON battery connector, the function of the Blister door design,
provided additional clearance between the inner surface of the
battery door and the ELCON connector installed on most USN T-34B
aircraft, which replaced the original two pin Cannon connector
installed in the production T-34A, B and B-45 aircraft.
The anomalies about the aircraft shown
as G-138 are primarily based on the fact that the aircraft when
stationed in Uruguay was operated on a Naval Base (Laguna de Sousa,
Near Punta del Este, Uruguay) which had another B model aircraft and
they could also request spares from the U.S. Navy stores system.
Notes:
1. NARF is The original Naval Air Repair
Facility which was assigned as an onsite Naval Aircraft Depot Level
Repair Facility located at mainside, NAS Pensacola.
2. MDAP is the Mutual Defense Assistance
(or Aid) Program of which most Latin American countries were
signatories.
